Did you know that researchers discovered several factors that increase a person’s risk of colorectal cancer?

Our DNA, given to us by our parents, contains a series of genes that control almost everything about us. Some of these genes control cell growth, cell division into new cells, and cell death. The gene that moderate these processes are referred to as Tumor Suppressor Genes.

When all is right in our bodies, our Tumor Suppressor Genes do exactly what they are supposed to do, they stop cells from growing out of control. However, sometimes an individual’s genetic code may predispose them to abnormal cell growth.

A very small portion of colorectal cancers are caused by inherited gene mutations. Many of these DNA changes and their effects on the growth of cells are now known by medical professionals and can be pinpointed.

Familial Adenomatous Polyposis and Gardner Syndromeare, which are caused by inherited changes in DNA, lead to the formation of hundreds of polyps in the colon. Overtime these polyps can develop onto colon cancer. Lynch Syndrome (hereditary non-polyposis colon cancer, or HNPCC) and Peutz-Jeghers Syndrome as well as MYH-Associated Polyposis are all caused by similiar heredity mutations to the DNA.

The American Cancer Society recommends discussing genetic testing with a qualified cancer genetics professional before any genetic testing is done.
