Breast MRI

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can be used to look specifically at the breast. Each exam produces hundreds of images of the breast, cross-sectional in all three directions (side-to-side, top-to-bottom, front-to-back), which are then read by a radiologist. It can show lesions not visible through mammography or ultrasound. It is also often used as a screening tool for women who are at an increased risk for breast cancer. Women with a strong family history of breast cancer or who carry a genetic abnormality are recommended MRI screening in addition to mammogram. Evaluation by a breast specialist is important in determining your need for additional screening.
